Green Stone Journeys partners with a local organization working in eco-tourism projects in the region. The project values and develops positive relations with the local communities to encourage ecological and sustainable travel. Designed to create awareness of these communities and to complement their daily and sustainable activities such as fishing and farming, this eco-tourism experience is an unforgettable journey that supports and sustains local livelihoods.
Accommodation will be pousadas in Santaram and Alter de Chão before and after the Amazon tour while enjoying hammocks under the stars on a river boat and in lodging at the local communities we visit during the 4-night Amazon boat tour. The Amazon boat tour includes all meals such as fresh fruits, fish, meat and other local vegetables from the region. Activities include a visit to the communal honey production and fish farm project, a handicrafts workshop and an interpretative hike with local guides through the jungle to explore the lush natural environment.
Arrive at any time in Rio de Janeiro on the first day to enjoy the world famous sites of the ‘cidade maravilhosa.’ Explore the famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches and take in the breathtaking views of “Christ the Redeemer” statue. The Pousada is situated in the charming neighborhood of Santa Teresa and we meet in the evening for our first group dinner.
Choose from many optional city tours and local activities on Day two in the city and we will join again in the evening for a dinner and prepare for our departure into the Amazon heartland.
From Rio de Janeiro, take an early morning flight to Santarém, a port town and meeting point to Belém and Manaus which lies along the bank of the green-blue river Tapajós. Accommodations will be in hotel for two nights upon our arrival in the area and explore some of the highlights of the region and to prepare for the Amazon departure.
Begin an Amazon river boat journey with a local guide and our private group on the river Arapiuns. Enjoy days cruising down the Amazon river to visit local communities and learn about their local lifestyle including the Atodi, Anã and Urucurea communities.
Accommodations will be on the river boat in hammocks or in the local communities when available. Discover the Amazon way of life in local workshops, visits with local artists, canoe rides and enjoy the direct experience of this region. Meals are included during this journey and includes fresh fish, fruits and other local delights.
After another full day along the Arapiuns river, we return to the mainland and transfer to Alter do Chão in the evening. Spend two nights in this village which is home to some of the prettiest fresh-water beaches in the Amazon. Visit the popular Ilha do Amor (Island of Love), a sandbar in front near the town and the ‘meeting of the waters’ with ochre-coloured waters of the Amazon flowing alongside each other for many kilometres without mixing, a famous highlight of the region and a spectacular site to see.
Take a flight in the morning from Santarém and return to Rio de Janeiro to enjoy one last evening together.
